Natural Dyeing

Our flat weave, hand tufted rugs and face masks are hand dyed using natural vegetable dyes. In India, the use of natural dyes for dyeing, painting and printing dates back to the prehistoric times. And thankfully today, natural dyes are making a comeback! The process is entirely free of nasty chemicals and does not pollute the waterways. Natural dyes are skin friendly, biodegradable and non carcinogenic.

Kadhwa Silk Weaving

Kadhwa which means embroidered is an exclusive technique of handloom weaving in the Varanasi region. It is an extremely intricate weave and could never be replicated on power looms. Each motif in a design is woven separately, leaving no loose threads at the back of the fabric. As you can imagine, this technique is labour intensive and requires great skill and dexterity. Two weavers sit side by side, only weaving approximately 10-15cm a day to produce our silk kadhwa cushions.

Block Printing

The process of block printing holds a place of pride in India. It is an age old craft that has been perfected and passed down over many generations. The blocks are made using woods such as teak or sycamore and are lovingly hand carved into intricate designs. It can often take around 10-15 days for a block to be perfected. Fabric or paper are pinned onto a printing table and once the colours have been prepared, the blocks are dipped into a colour and then pressed firmly onto the fabric.
